BLACK GIRLS ROCK! QUEENS’ Camp for Leadership and Excellence

In the summer of 2011 Beverly Bond, the Founder and Executive Director of BLACK GIRLS ROCK! Inc., launched the inaugural QUEENS’ CAMP FOR LEADERSHIP & EXCELLENCE in response to the overwhelming demand to expand BLACK GIRLS ROCK! mentoring programs. Over the past two years, this selective summer program has welcomed exceptional girls from around the world to engage in enriching and life-changing experiences. This year the two-week intensive leadership program will be held at Columbia University in New York City from July 20 to August 3, 2013. Through a highly selective application process, BLACK GIRLS ROCK! will accept female applicants who exhibit strong leadership qualities, high moral character, and excellent academic standing.Queens Camp participants are encouraged to triumph over new leadership development challenges together; to engage in service learning activities, to take an active role in the academic, art, life-skills, and college prep workshops; and to cultivate lasting friendships with their peers. Staff members will mentor participants and facilitate dynamic programs emphasizing the importance of team work, community service and civic engagement, critical thinking, goal setting, and work ethic in order to promote self-confidence, positive social development and active leadership. Our goal is to foster the participants’ intentional pursuit of excellence, integrity, self-discipline, and collective accountability so that they may be prepared to be sound leaders in their local community and informed global citizens.

The BLACK GIRLS ROCK! Queens’ Camp for Leadership & Excellence is a two week immersion program for girls from around the world! Past participants have traveled from Liberia, Jamaica, Japan, South Africa and various states across the US. Each year, BLACK GIRLS ROCK! invites dynamic young women with leadership potential to participate in this intensive program, which offers lectures and workshops lead by world-class professors and other professionals across sectors.

EXPOSURE 

2 weeks of intensive instruction in over 10 different courses including Innovation &TechnologyEntrepreneurship, Service Learning, Civic Engagement, DJ Turntablism, MusicologyFilm, Literature, Creative Writing and more!

ENRICHMENT

20+ speakers, demos, presentations and workshops led by professionals and entrepreneurs; team building challenges; field trips to museums, academic institutions and more.

ENLIGHTENMENT

Group mentoring discussions with leading members of the community, scholars, top female executives and influential women from diverse industries who will provide the socio-emotional support and guidance needed for positive development.

What is BLACK GIRLS ROCK! Queens’ Camp for Leadership and Excellence?

BLACK GIRLS ROCK! Inc. is a 501(c)3 nonprofit youth empowerment and mentoring organization. The Queens Camp for Leadership and Excellence offers a truly dynamic experience where junior high and high school students are able to live on a collegiate campus and engage in enrichment activities that will strengthen their leadership and academic skills. Why should we choose BLACK GIRLS ROCK! Queens’ Camp? What types of programs are offered at Queens’ Camp for Leadership and Excellence?

BLACK GIRLS ROCK! Queens’ Camp is an intensive that attracts outstanding candidates from around the world. Our dynamic curriculum offers skills in diverse disciplines including Research, Technology, Communications, and the Arts. In addition, Queens’ Camp Alumnae benefit from continued mentorship, college prep assistance, and scholarships.

How are girls selected to participate in this program?

BLACK GIRLS ROCK! Queens’ Camp has  a competitive application process. A credentialed selection committee reviews all completed applications received before April 16, 2014. Accepted campers are notified by June 9, 2014.

What are the eligibility requirements?

We look for candidates who are:

  • Girls between ages 13-17 and in grades 7-11.  2014 graduating seniors are not eligible to apply.
  • Students who are in good academic standing
  • Students who have an invested interest in
    • the African Diaspora and its arts, histories, and cultures
    • Civic engagement
    • Scholarship
    • Global sisterhood
    • Leadership Development
  •  Students who have a concern for global issues, particularly those impacting Black women and girls
  • Girls who have been identified as leaders or who display strong leadership capabilities

If interested candidates are twelve (12) years old can they still apply?

Twelve-year-old applicants must be thirteen by the camp start date: July 2014.

When and where does the camp take place?

The Queens’ Camp is a two week leadership intensive program, which takes place in July/August in the city of New York.

How much does the camp cost?

The activities fee for the overnight camp is $500 (round trip travel is not included in this fee). Note that financial assistance is available by application only. Accepted applicants may request a financial aid application for our need-based scholarships. The true cost of camp per attendee is $2,500. However, we have significantly subsidized this amount, enabling families to better afford summer camp.

Are there scholarships? Is financial aid offered?
